What doctors say
I'm a family physician, and about a third of my patients speak Spanish as their first language. For years I relied on interpreters or my own broken phrases, and I always felt I was missing part of the conversation. I worked with Become Fluent twice a week for six months. The lessons were built around my actual work: taking a history, explaining a diagnosis, going over medications, and the small talk that puts a nervous patient at ease. We role-played appointments, and Become Fluent pushed me to handle the parts that don't go to script, like a patient who answers a different question than the one I asked. Now I run most of my Spanish-language visits on my own. I still use an interpreter for complex or high-stakes conversations, but my patients can talk to me directly, and I can hear what they're telling me. Several have mentioned it. That was the goal, and I got there.
Clinical immersion trip (optional add-on)
If you want to use your Spanish in a clinical setting abroad, Become Fluent offers an optional clinical immersion trip, run with a partner organization in Latin America. It is open to licensed medical professionals and to students in the last two years of medical school.
- Placements are in hospitals, clinics, assisted living and other healthcare facilities, working alongside doctors, nurses, therapists and other medical professionals.
- Locations: Antigua in Guatemala, Cusco in Peru, and San José and Manuel Antonio in Costa Rica.
- Trips run from one to four weeks.
- What you do depends on the placement, your medical experience and your Spanish. Examples include shadowing a doctor or nurse, assisting with general check-ups and triage, taking vital signs and helping to run medical campaigns.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take a doctor to reach conversational medical Spanish?
It depends on your starting level and how often you have lessons. There is no fixed number of weeks. The first 10 sessions are planned around your specialty, so the Spanish you practise early is the Spanish you use with patients.
What Spanish does a physician need for a patient history?
A physician needs the questions that open a history: the reason for the visit, onset and duration of symptoms, medications, allergies and past illnesses, plus the vocabulary for a review of systems. Lessons also train you to understand the answers, in realistic patient speech.
Is a private medical Spanish tutor better than a course?
A course follows one syllabus for everyone. A private tutor builds lessons around your specialty, your level and the situations you meet at work, and corrects you as you speak. A course can suit you if you want a fixed schedule and a group. Private lessons suit you if you want the material to match your own practice.
What is the difference between medical Spanish certification and interpreter certification?
Medical Spanish training teaches you to communicate directly with patients in Spanish. Interpreter certification is a separate credential for interpreting between two languages. Become Fluent lessons are language training. They are not an interpreter qualification or a medical qualification.
How much does a private medical Spanish tutor cost?
Private tutors price by the session, and rates vary widely between tutors. Become Fluent lessons last 60 minutes. Rates are shared when you book a trial lesson.
